Red Thyme * Shai-Li

The tunes of Red Thyme explore the traditional sensibilities of Americana genres, such as Bluegrass, Traditional Folk, Post-Revival Folk, Fusion, and Manouche Jazz. They persistently explore and push the boundaries of the folk and country world. The essence of Red Thyme can be likened to the vocal prowess of Sierra Ferrell mixed with Amy Winehouse and the songwriting deftness of Bella White, Billy Strings, and Adrianne Lenker.

Self-described as a music collective, the group is fronted by songwriting and vocal powerhouse Hals Smedstad and guitar aficionado Jeremiah Wenger. The core duo is frequently accompanied by other local folk all-star’s who they’ve crossed paths with among the unfurling Michigan folk community’s various bluegrass & fiddle music camps, festivals, and jams.

Jeremiah is a veteran of the Grand Rapids music scene on Michigan’s ‘third-coast, and has opened up for artists such as Carsie Blanton, Luke Winslow-King, and more. You can catch “Jerry,” shedding tasteful licks and adding ethereal electric-guitar ambience alongside Austin Benzing and Hannah Rose Graves. His playing is distinct, versatile, and skilled. However, Jerry’s talents do not stop short with instrumentation: he also produces Red Thyme’s records.

Their debut record, “Places You Don’t Go – EP,” comes out in September.
